Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
Last night, in a turn of events that should have surprised no one, Donald John Trump was elected President of the United States of America.
Black folk weren’t really surprised though. Many of us acted shocked and forlornly befuddled, but the America on display is the very same morally bankrupt terror we’ve been decrying for YEARS. Eschewing all pretense at attractive pink elephants, this is the snaggletoothed, fiery beast crouched menacingly in the middle of the room. The beast we pointed to when Trayvon was murdered, when Tamir was murdered, when Sandra Bland was brutalized and murdered. The beast we pointed to when being executed on camera had the exact same affect as being murdered off camera… NONE.
This is the beast our mothers and grandmothers, fathers and grandfathers quietly taught us about while growing up. Giving 5 year olds strict lessons on how to behave around police, so that “something bad doesn’t happen.” So that we weren’t killed by the spirit of this dastardly monstrosity. Every black person in America has received the kind of nuanced education one only receives during war times, because America is precisely that.
A war zone.
Donald Trump isn’t really the issue. He isn’t America. He is but a single man. A cog in the machine.
The issue is all the spawn of the fiery beast, all those people who voted for him because they identify with him.
All. Those. People.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
However, this is now the perfect God time. NOT because of President Trump. He may do everything he promised, he may switch up the game entirely, he may have Nasa build him a ship and head off to mars. No, the reason this is a perfect God time is because the worst case scenario has officially happened. And when the worst case scenario happens, we can no longer avoid our true power. This is why worst case scenarios exist and why they MUST happen.
Because many of us refuse to truly choose life without it.
But how can you hold back now? How can you not employ reckless discipline to pursue your dream, intentionally love on your family, purposely forgive your friends, be disruptively kind to your coworkers, teachers, and classmates at this point? How can you dare avoid hard personal truths, and continue peddling the emotional blindness of atheism? How can you stomache wallowing in the lukewarm shallows of your church that is all form, but next to no power? How can you summon the unmitigated gall to personify, to be willingly possessed by, to be the arrogant avatar of NORMAL any longer?
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:9
At some point, we’ve got to grow up. This isn’t about proselytism. This is about truth.
Until Jesus/YHWH/Yeshua (pick which makes you most comfortable) is your everything… you won’t really have anything else. This goes for Christians as well. The benchmark isn’t getting saved. The benchmark is realizing there is no benchmark. Christianity isn’t something we DO, like going to the movies or feeding the homeless. It’s who we ARE. Believers. People committed to the Christ identity. Christianity is what empowers us to do everything else.
Jesus said “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
He said this both to folks who believed in who He was and those who didn’t. This then is our legacy. Light. The election of President Trump proves that this life isn’t ABOUT you. At all. Regardless of what he does in office, good or bad, the fact that he got elected shows you that this life is not about you.
So use that to your advantage.
Let the light out.
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.” -2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV)
